Architecture Snob and the LafargeHolcim Foundation were invited by renowned German architect Jürgen Mayer H. to explore their experiences of “Communicating Architecture” at the 10th conversation on “Curating Architecture” at Soho House Berlin, Germany. After the two-hour session, the audience had not just met two organizations but two individuals: Marcin Szczelina from Warsaw, and Edward Schwarz from Zurich.

Following separate presentations of their ongoing work in the context of disseminating architecture in exhibitions (Szczelina) and competitions (Schwarz), moderator Mayer H. encouraged the presenters to get personal and explain why and how they chose architecture as a medium to communicate. Marcin Szczelina studied architecture and specialized in curating exhibitions on an international level, organizes “out-of-the-box” events in Poland and has become an “architectural VIP” in his country where he drives the most important architecture blogs.

Edward Schwarz entered the world of architecture more indirectly as a junior editor of a Swiss trade magazine. He was fascinated by the broad scope and impact of architecture and finally moved into the construction industry where he initiated programs focusing on promoting sustainable design on a global level. The outcome of the work of both speakers benefits an audience far beyond the architectural community – it’s about communicating, “eye-opening” and fostering better life through architecture.

Jürgen Mayer H is no stranger to the LafargeHolcim Foundation. He was winner of an LafargeHolcim Award in the first cycle of the world’s leading competition for sustainable design in 2005. Now completed, Metropol Parasol - the redevelopment of the Plaza de la Encarnación is a new landmark and unique urban space within the dense fabric of the medieval inner city of Seville; and it has reactivated collective recognition of the city and its culture.
