“Students and young professionals around the world now have an unlimited opportunity to share their ideas and win international recognition through the LafargeHolcim Awards,” says PhD candidate and LafargeHolcim Forum 2016 student poster winner, Eduardo Pizarro. The enthusiastic Brazilian architecture student is conducting research on “Turning Voids into Infrastructure” to find ways to leverage spaces between the buildings in Paraisópolis, the second largest favela in the city where he studies at the Faculty of Architecture & Urbanism at the University of São Paulo (USP).
Eduardo Pizarro presented his research project at the Sustainable Construction Briefing by MEED Magazine in Cairo. He explained how his approach had used the potential of small pockets within the favela to deliver much-needed infrastructure and community spaces. He also received an award for “outstanding creativity and contribution to sustainable construction” from Hussain Mansi, CEO of Lafarge Egypt, a member of LafargeHolcim.
Acting as a global Ambassador of the LafargeHolcim Awards competition, Eduardo Pizarro also presented his project and participated in workshops at the American University in Cairo (AUC). The university is one of a select group of affiliated universities of the LafargeHolcim Foundation, which are drawn from around the world and assist the Foundation by hosting symposiums and Awards jury meetings.
The 5th International LafargeHolcim Awards competition is open for entries until March 21, 2017. It is the most significant global competition in sustainable design, and seeks projects in architecture, building and civil engineering, landscape and urban design, materials, products and construction technologies that contribute to the five “target issues” for sustainable construction.
