Project entry 2014 Latin America – Articulated Site: Water reservoirs as public park, Medellín, Colombia
Outdoor auditorium: The architectural form adapts to the pre-existing elements to ensure minimal impact, and results in an affordable and sustainable building. The sustainable environmental design strategies tend to maximize passive solar design, natural lighting and ventilation, and food waste control, among others. Additionally, the corporate premises ensure operation of the water distribution network, as well as consideration of future projects that the promoter plans on site.

Project entry 2014 Latin America – Articulated Site: Water reservoirs as public park, Medellín, Colombia
Rooftop view and design process: Level, reuse, articulate, integrate and illuminate. The project established continuity using public space as the articulating piece and transitional axis between the city and the architectural object. The topography and the pre-existing elements are understood and transformed into landscape space that contains the program. Furthermore, local vegetation is used to improve environmental quality by creating bird-watching and wildlife trails.

The creation of public space through the project Articulated Site: Water reservoirs as public park is under way at UVA Orfelinato in Medellín. The project forms part of a network of parks, and ten of the 14 sites will have been completed and open to the public by the end of 2015.
Articulated Site centers on the creation of public space around and above a series of water reservoirs. One of the two decommissioned water tanks is being converted into an amphitheater that will be covered with a lightweight layer to protect visitors from sun and rain. The roof structure is supported by pillars that are anchored up to 10 meters into the ground. The project is a symbol of sustainable urban development, providing leisure and public realm through public space as well as laying a platform for culture, research and knowledge diffusion through the interaction of public and private actors with the community.
