Doreen Heng Liu is Founder and Principal of NODE based in based in Shenzhen, China and was a member of the Holcim Foundation Awards 2017 jury for Asia Pacific.

Doreen Heng Liu is also an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2008–); and was a Guest Professor in the Department of Architecture at the ETH Zurich (2015/16).

Her research focuses on contemporary urbanism and architecture in the Pearl River Delta and the specific impact of urbanization on design and practice in China today.

She established her practice NODE (Nansha Original Design) in Hong Kong and Nansha, Guangzhou in 2004, relocating to Shenzhen in 2009. The firm’s built architectural works include the Renovation of Shekou Dachan Flour Mill (2015); the Entrance Building and Warehouse of the renovated Shekou Fufa Glass Factory, Shenzhen (2013); and the Guangzhao Times Museum (2010).

Doreen Heng Liu’s design works have been published in magazines including Architectural Record, Domus, Volume, and Abitare. NODE has participated in various architectural and art exhibitions including Shanghai Biennale, Guangzhou Triennial, Shenzhen Architecture & Urbanism Biennale, Venice Biennale and Rotterdam Architectural Biennale.

She obtained her MArch from the University of California – Berkeley, USA (1994); and a Doctor of Design from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, USA (2008).

With her firm NODE, she was shortlisted as one of five international emerging architects for the Audi Urban Future Initiative (AUFI) awards (2012); and was nominated as Curator for the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia (2014). She won the Excellent Award for Creative Design; and was nominated as Curator for the Shenzhen Hong Kong Urbanism / Architecture Bi-city Biennial, together with Aaron Betsky, Hubert Klumpner and Alfredo Brillembourg (2015).
