He is winner of the Holcim Foundation Awards 2020 Silver for Latin America for Collective Harvest: a community-engaged nut processing facility in Laranjal do Jari, Brazil. The jury especially praised how the programmatic function of the building is solved through the elegant duality between light roofs and the massive walls to create volumes that accommodate the facilities necessary for Brazil nut processing.
Gustavo Utrabo run his own studio where he intends to expand the architecture field, connect people and imagine the future through sustainable and inclusive approaches. These ideas come together in an extensive portfolio that has earned recognition including the RIBA International Prize (2018), RIBA International Emerging Architect (2018), The Best Architecture of the 21st Century by The Guardian, Highly commended Prize -The Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Awards 2019, Finalist at Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize Emerge - IIT College of Architecture Chicago 2018, Two times finalist at Harvard Wheelwright Prize, ArchDaily Building of the Year 2018, among others.
In 2020 Utrabo received the title of Knight of the Order of Rio Branco for his significant contribution to Brazilian Culture.
His first monograph Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo, ojo cerrado para verte mejor / eyes shut to see you better (El Croquis, 2021) was published, presenting fourteen recent works by Estúdio Gustavo Utrabo, from private houses, a public market, and a cultural centre, to shading structures and children’s villages in the jungle.
