Jane Wernick has taught at many schools, including the Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD), the Mackintosh School of Architecture and the Architectural Association (AA), and is also on the Council of the Architectural Association.

She graduated from the University of Southampton, with a BSc (Honors) degree in Civil Engineering (1976). She won the 2013 First Woman of the Built Environment Award. She is a member of various design review panels in the United Kingdom and is a member of the EDGE think tank. She was also a member of Royal Institute of British Architect’s Building Futures Steering Committee, for which she edited the book, Building Happiness: Architecture to Make You Smile (Black Dog Architecture, 2008), and was chair of the Diversity Task Force of the Construction Industry Council.

She is a structural engineer who likes to work on projects that give delight and has extensive experience of unusual and challenging structures designed in collaboration with leading architects. She worked for Ove Arup & Partners (1976-98) and started and ran their Los Angeles office (1986-88). Her most notable project with Arup was the Millennium Wheel (now the London Eye). Other projects included: Lille TGV Station with SNCF; and Stansted Airport terminal building with Foster Associates.

She founded Jane Wernick Associates in 1998, and was director of projects including: Møller Centre, Cambridge with DSDHA; Des Moines Public Library, Iowa with David Chipperfield Architects; the Kew Treetop Walkway with Marks Barfield Architects; the Young Vic Theatre with Hawarth Thomkins, and Living Architecture houses with MVRDV, Hopkins Architects, Jarmund/Vigsnæs, NORD, John Pawson and Atelier Zumthor. Jane Wernick Associates joined engineersHRW in 2015.

She received first prize in the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Bridge Competition (1988); is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (2009); and became Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to structural and civil engineering in the New Year Honors list (2015).
