The New European Bauhaus is an environmental, economic and cultural project, aimed at combining design, sustainability, accessibility, affordability and investment. The project help to deliver the European Green Deal – a set of policies set out by the European Commission to make Europe climate neutral by 2050.

The Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction has been selected to become an Official Partner of the New European Bauhaus and will act as a promoter and key dialogue stakeholder throughout the initiative.

The Holcim Foundation will support the generation of ideas that can be openly shared through the New European Bauhaus website; identify inspirational projects practices or concepts; and engage with citizens to discuss and collect expectations on the qualitative transformation of living spaces and associated lifestyles. To establish the discussions, the New European Bauhaus Conference will be held on 22/23 April. Maria Atkinson AM, Chairperson of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction will participate in an expert panel at the conference – 22 April (from 16:40 CET). She will present ideas on moving the built environment towards circularity and net-zero though collaboration between industry and policy makers and across the value chain.

The phases of the New European Bauhaus project are:

• Design: connect to what is already out there to see where and how the New European Bauhaus can accelerate, concretise and materialise good ideas.
• Delivery: setting up at least five New European Bauhaus pilots.
• Dissemination: diffusing good ideas and concepts to a broader audience, not only in Europe but also beyond. This will be about networking and sharing knowledge between practitioners on the best available methods, solutions and prototypes.

The New European Bauhaus is a key project of the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This ambitious and far-sighted Europe-wide initiative calls on businesses, organisations, institutions and the citizens of Europe to contribute to evolving future sustainable ways of living. The outcome of the co-design phase will be a support framework based on EU programs, including a call for proposals for pilots in different EU Member States where the new Bauhaus concept will come to life.

The New European Bauhaus is named after the hugely influential German design school founded by Walter Gropius in 1919 that sought to combine mass production with individual artistic vision. The New European Bauhaus forms part of the European Union’s sustainability-driven coronavirus recovery plan called NextGenerationEU.
