The generously illustrated 250-page publication commemorates the most successful of more than 5,000 entries in the 5th cycle of the International LafargeHolcim Awards for projects and visions in sustainable construction. The book includes project descriptions and jury appraisals of the 60 prize-winning projects and presents the independent juries of renowned experts who selected the best submissions.
Winning a prize in the LafargeHolcim Awards has become a credential of success that’s respected not only by architects, engineers, scientists, and planners as well as by academic institutions and the media. The successful projects from 36 countries illustrate increasingly sophisticated and interdisciplinary approaches that embrace architectural aesthetics and “green building” – as well as enabling social agency. One third of the featured projects were designed by students and young professionals, confirming the personal engagement in sustainability of the next generation of industry specialists.
In-depth interviews with the 15 finalist teams from all regions of the world that qualified for the Global LafargeHolcim Awards 2018 look behind the scenes, and introduce the main winning projects in detail – including a publicly accessible water retention and treatment complex in an under-privileged area of Mexico City; a religious and secular complex in Niger interpreting traditional local construction; and a community-driven neighborhood planning project for energy and food production as well as for civic engagement in the USA.
Fifth LafargeHolcim Awards – Sustainable Construction 2017/2018 presents a new horizon of examples of sustainable construction from around the globe in diverse locations, economies, climates and societies. It is written for a broad audience by giving an overview of the current status of sustainable construction, and also suggesting inspiration and technical details for building industry professionals.
