Community leaders and technicians also participated in this process with an idea of “learning by doing”. The project program illustrated that public spaces educate and become schools to train communities to open new avenues of work opportunities and promote sustainable consolidation. Seven self-sustaining houses have been built and other infrastructure will be built using bamboo catenaries, demonstrating the adaptability and flexibility of the material to carry out projects that strengthen responsible tourism and respond to local needs such as a sports center, community house, mangrove dock, and a museum/school of knowledge.
Project status: Under construction (started February 2022).
The jury panel was deeply impressed by this design project, which exemplifies an outstanding approach to rebuilding communities and territories affected by natural disasters. The architects’ collaboration with the community to transform it into a sustainable island was highly regarded. Instead of relocating the people, the project involved them in the process, showcasing the value of traditional construction systems to restore their territory. The jury particularly welcomed this inclusive approach which fosters a sense of ownership and pride among the residents. The buildings stood out for their impressive morphology due mainly to the use of bamboo, which not only provided structural resilience but also added an aesthetically appealing touch to the project.
The project’s brief, skillfully blending residential buildings with cultural and environmental infrastructures was also highly commended. This balanced mix demonstrated a comprehensive and thoughtful design approach. The incorporation of incredible landscapes and well-thought-out water management and energy generation systems further showcased the project’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Finally, the jury was appreciative of the project’s unwavering consistency and the successful utilization of the traditional building typology within this ongoing construction endeavor. This serves as a tangible demonstration of the project’s viability and its potential to make a substantial impact.
