The 4th International Holcim Awards – Your Choice voting competition ran from March 16 until May 19, 2015 to find the favorite “Next Generation” sustainable construction projects and received more than 120,000 votes. The Holcim Foundation launched a community voting competition dedicated to the “Next Generation” winning projects that made you the jury. The winning projects were honored at the first ever "Next Generation" Awards Lab – a one-day workshop on sustainable construction for all “Next Generation” prize winners of the regional Holcim Awards 2014. The Lab was held on September 24, 2015 in New York City, USA.

The design aims to improve the deteriorating physical and social conditions of the Bukit Jarian Kampong in Bandung. Two mutually-dependent measures are initiated. First, the scheme introduces a sanitation hub as public space in the center of the slum. Second, the project’s objective is to restore the polluted river, which has been used for an extensive period as a garbage dump.

Designed in a square pattern of bridges, buildings and platforms over a landfill bordering the river, the proposed hub is accessible from several sides, opening connections to the neighborhood while providing a range of public amenities, such as public toilets, a recycling facility and a learning center.

Antonius Richard Rusli from Universitas Katolik Parahyangan views the fundamental transformation through participatory design as the key element of his project that brings the spirit of the neighborhood (Kampung) and desirability back to an inaccessible slum along the river. His project, “Social Design: Urban neighborhood remediation” in Bandung, Indonesia, improves deteriorating physical and social conditions of the Bukit Jarian Kampong by introducing a sanitation hub as public space in the center of the slum and also restoring the polluted river, and it won the “Next Generation” 3rd prize.

The winning projects of the Holcim Awards 2014 Asia Pacific show how building with sustainable construction in mind can enhance the region’s human, natural and economic performance. A bird sanctuary in Thailand, a locally-adapted orphanage in Nepal, and a community library in Sri Lanka received the top prizes.

The jury greatly appreciates the efforts undertaken by the group of young designers to improve the quality of informal settlements in Indonesia. Particularly valued is the project’s vision to conceive of sanitation concurrently as an architectural, urban and a social project. Infrastructure design is viewed in terms of its physical and societal impact, improving the environment while improving community relations.
