Urban Regeneration: Designing Water-Conscious Cities
Holcim Awards Webinars look at different approaches to ecological revival in cities from Mexico and Colombia that exhibit water consciousness at varied scales

Designing with water in Mexico and Colombia
Utopia Estrella Iztapalapa (Awards 2023 Gold for Latin America) will transform an unused plot of land comprising a landfill, a small forest, and an artificial wetland into an eco-social hub that supports a neighbourhood that presently lacks public facilities. It will deploy waste as a resource for new buildings that include a sport and a cultural centre. All new developments will centre around the conserved forest and wetland to minimise impact.

Utopia Estrella Iztapalapa in Mexico - An urban remediation project that aims to transform a site including a former landfill to create facilities for sport, culture, social engagement, and ecological education for the 230,000 inhabitants of Iztapalapa.
Memories of Water (Awards 2023 Acknowledgement for Latin America) seeks to reinvigorate the floodplains of Rionegro, which have deteriorated due to poor urban planning, and provide the city with a living waterfront. It will employ a large-scale amphibious park system that will coexist with seasonal flooding. Cultural programs such as recreational, sports and commercial activities will emphasise people’s connection with water.
